Troy Holmes Lake: Battle of the Finesse fishermen!

The stage was set for a dual between PWF of the South vs. PWF of the North. South won the toss and picked Holmes Lake (Troy). Already the North repesentative was feeling the pressure. It was a 142 mile journey and fishoff started at day break. South was using 4 and 6 pound test while north had 6 and 8 pound test.  North went to the plastics from the git go. Big mistake.  South was throwing crankbaits and immediately jumped out to a 5 to 0 lead on the first drift. These drifts continued all day as the wind and heat were punishing both of them. Took a break for lunch and north was hoping that south would take a nap so he could sneak back out and make up some of the gap. At 5:30pm North threw in the towel, shook hands and declared South the winner.  Final score
  Russ Garrett   30 fish
  Bob Lundin   11 fish
Everything was caught on Crankbaits shallow running or rattletraps ripped through the weeds. I think Russ got one on a senko just to show me it could be done. We dragged the anchor to slow our drifts but poor Russ had to clean off 100 pound of weeds at the end of each drift.
Took the long ride back home thinking about a rematch at Clifton, Fairfield or Six O.
It was a fun day and I never really felt that we were competing, just a nice way to spend a day on the water with another member.

Bob and Russ met at our club fish fry last month and struck up a conversation and perhaps a friendship? At the very least they each found a new fishing partner.

If your looking for a fishing partner; simply post your name and e-mail on a NEW fishing report and you should find another member looking for a partner. We hope to have some type of partner finder system on our website within the next 6 months. Until then, just ask on the fishing report section.

Man that’s outstanding play-by-play coverage Bob!! You should be working for ESPN Outdoors. As we had talked about, in the grand scheme of things, the fishing was just decent not great. Holmes usually fishes much better than that. Mother Nature did not do us any favors this day. By the way, I don’t remember winning any coin toss….Oh! I get it. It’s a metaphor.

Next trip I’m sure the results will be much different. You will have the home field advantage and I get to be the road warrior. Retaliation will be swift. On that day, the PWF Northern empire will strike back.

Have we ever given any though to an East vs. West tournament style showdown?

Interesting thought. 2 years ago we sent out a survey to our membership and asked 14 questions. One of those 14 questions was; Would you be interested in competitive fishing tournaments? The overwhelming response was NO. Out of 150 returned surveys we had less than 15 said that they would be interested. We had more than 70 that answered YES to club fish fry get togethers. We have averaged about 17 members to our club fish frys. So, I’m afraid we might just have 3 or 4 show for a club tournament. FYI, I was very surprised by the lack of interest in competitive tournaments, so I was glad we asked. Many of the responses were; if I wanted to fish competitively, I would fish in public lake tournaments, I fish on private water lakes for the sheer enjoyment of fishing.

Well I am down to fish a PWF tourney. I agree, a tourney with a bunch of ego maniacs in their $60k ego boats is not what I am interested in. I am not 19 anymore, I am grown and have a family and don’t have time for that nonsense. But some good friendly competition is always fun. If it ever happens, I am interested if we can put if far enough out and block off the schedule. Summer time tournament at one of our big lakes? Who’s in? Winning team gets bragging rights.

I was just thinking about how some type of PWF tourney would gain my interest. This was of course after the fish fry and the competition on who could boat the most fish… I would definitely be inclined to participate should an event get kicked off!

If you are interested in a fall fishing tournament on one of our club lakes, please e-mail me at salexander@privatewaterfishing.com If we get 10 or more let’s put something together.
