Troy - Holmes Lake
Description:
This 27 acre lake, set among the gently rolling hills of central Texas, was built in the late 70's and stocked with bass and catfish and has been fished very little over the years. This property is located about 7 miles east of Troy Texas which is on I-35 with the entry gate on an all weather gravel road. This is an easy drive from the Metroplex (120 miles South or about 2 hours) or Austin (about 60 miles North or 1 hour).
Under water structure is present, however, there is very little tree presence in the water. The water is about 24 feet deep when the lake is full along the 440 foot dam.
A fisheries biologist was employed for several years to manage the lake with the goal of producing larger fish. His work is now showing results. The largest bass caught in 2010 was a little over 10 pounds and numerous fish are routinely being caught in the 3 to 5 pound range.
In May of 2007, 500 channel catfish were introduced into the lake along with 100 hybrid bluegill and some sterile grass carp (now in the 30 pound range) to help with vegetation control. In May of 2010 140 pounds of Tilapia ranging from 4 to 8 inches were put into the lake and should spawn quickly giving an additional food source for the bass.
There is an RV pad with 50 amp service close to the entry gate and boat launch area which makes the lake somewhat unique compared to other Private Water Fishing properties. There is a small homemade septic tank for the black water. The gray water can be put on the ground towards the road. There is NO water hookup at this site.
This property is part of working cattle ranch and the RV pad area is not fenced separately.
Bank fishing is not allowed around the lake but, fishing from the actual dam structure is permissible. Please do not drive on the dam. The current pier is somewhat unstable (but useable) and several folks fishing from it at the same time could present a hazard.
Like all club properties, please remember to leave all gates as you found them, if the gate is closed and locked, please drive through and close and lock the gate. If the gate is open when you found it, please leave it open.
