Saturday 5-26: We were on the water at sunrise. Light winds and good cloud cover. There were lots of fish busting the shoreline so we tried Pop-R’s and Buzz baits early. No luck on the buzz baits, but the Pop-R was successful. We caught a handful of fish in the 1st hour but had to head in due to a minor injury my wife suffered. We got back on the water about 12 noon and fished hard until sundown. We caught a total of 24. We harvested 21 dinks and released 3. The largest fish was 2.59lbs. I did lose a large fish on a wacky worm. She broke water and spit the hook at me after stripping about 15 feet of line off my light spinning set up. Estimate a 5-8lb class fish. We caught most of our fish on PopRs, 3” swimbaits, wacky worms and some buzzbait action in the evening.
Sunday 5-27: On the water at sunrise. Windy with no cloud cover early. Very little feeding action on the surface. Tried the same top water approach as the previous morning with no luck. Found some fish stacked up near submerged trees about 8am. Caught 9 in about two hours using a plastic worm. Both weightless and texas rigged. We broke early for lunch and hit the House Sisters restaurant recommended on the PWF website. Great food! My wife and I had a home cooking lunch with drink and this awesome “chocolate cobbler” and the bill was 12 bucks. In the afternoon we had success with swimbaits, lipless crankbaits and texas rigged worms. Our day 2 total was 23 fish. 21 harvested and 2 released.
We used the V-bottom boat both days. Consistent with previous reports the transom is rotting out, so bring a 3 foot long piece of 1” x 4” wood to mount your motor. This should help preserve the back of the boat. The V-bottom bottom is definitely the best of the 3 options.
We stayed in the cabin for 2 days. With a little work it could really be outstanding. It needs a good cleaning, but we made out just fine. I had trouble getting reception on the TV at night, but there is a VCR…so bring some old videos as a backup. The AC worked great.
Total fish for 2 days: 47. 42 harvested and 5 released.
