I am a new member of PWF and this is my first report.  I look forward to meeting all of you one day to share experiences and knowledge.

My wife and I fished the afternoon on Malouf on Sunday, May 6th.  The temp was in the low to mid 90s and the winds were around 10-15 mph between 12noon and 3pm, but increased to 20-25mph from 3pm to about 6pm when we rapped it up.

It was tough going most of the day due to the windy conditions.  We caught 5 short fish that were harvested and 5 over the 14” mark.  The largest fish was just short of 3lbs.

All 10 fish were taken on spinnerbaits and wacky worms with the exception of one taken on a swimbait.

I was bummed to quit at 6pm because I really think the topwater bite would have turned on at dusk….but the wind was just to tough to deal with for another 2 hours.

The lake is really beautiful with lots of flooded grass shoreline and some sunken trees in the middle of the lake.  We really enjoyed ourselves despite the wind.  I’d like to give it another shot and try the morning bite.

John,

Welcome to the club. I like Malouf lake a lot, especially given its proximity to Dallas. If I leave work early and miss the traffic, I can be on the water 50 minutes after I walk out of my house. I’ve had good evening bite action there in the past. Be sure to get back soon and give it a go.

Thanks Tim.  I did have one short strike on a buzz bait right before we called it quits….so I will make sure to give it another go.

I’m heading to Bowie: Back side of the Moon on Sunday….been there?  Any tips?

Kirby,

I have fished back side of the moon many times. The lake is void of vegetation allowing you to throw just about anything in the tackle box. Try square bill crankbaits and rattle traps. I’ve had good luck on buzz baits early and late. The water is usually turbid, off color, so visibility is generally 12 to 24 inches. When we shocked the lake 6 months ago the fish were very healthy with a great forage base. There are also lots of big catfish for those who like to catfish.
