Ron Dupree and I kept searching for a pattern at Post Oak Lake on Saturday the 22nd but never really found it.  The early morning topwater pattern was a disappointment, one on a Pop-R (extremely violent blowup all out of proportion with the bass size).  Then one on a TX-rigged craw in front of the dam.  Then the big bass of the day, a 4.5# on an underspin near the end of the stumpline. No real followup catches for any of these as we kept circling the lake trying different lures, retrieves, water depths,…  Before the extreme heat (103) chased us off the water a little after 1PM, we had managed to catch 21 bass with six of these harvested.  Most of the rest were around 2.5# or so with a few closer to 3#.  The best pattern that we found was “mid-sized crankbait (squarebill or medium diver) retrieved fairly slowly in five to six feet of water”.  Over half of the bass were caught this way.

The lake is about a foot low with 88-90 degree water and very little vegetation.  There actually seems to be less vegetation that during late spring.  There is a thermocline at eight feet if I interpretted the depthfinder correctly.  No signature of fish below that and no bites.

The new seats on the pontoon boat are quite an improvement.  Bravo!
