Caught 10 bass AM only.  Only two were smaller than 14 inches, which were harvested.  Largest was 3.6 lbs.  5mph wind, 85 degrees, water 81 degrees.  Topwater bite was non-existent.  My guest caught the big one on a black/blue 5-inch worm.  I caught all my bass on KVD 1.5 shallow diving crankbait, sexy shad.  We caught all bass prior to 9AM, except for one, and then the bite shut off.  We threw everything from horny toads, jigs, jiggin’ spoons, lizards and magnum flukes to umbrella rigs, but nothing was successful.  Bluebird skies didn’t help.  It’s a great lake, though, and easy access.  Best jonboat of all the PWF lakes.

If you don’t mind sharing, where did you catch them? I went out Sunday afternoon and got skunked for about 3 hours until I finally caught two tiny ones and one decent size(all on a green spinnerbait w/ a copper blade). That was about 7pm then then they shut down again. No offense taken if you want to keep the location a secret. Sounds like the big difference in our luck was the time of day.

Also, did you find water in the boat when you got there? I did. There was a solid two feet of water that I bailed for 45 mins. before hitting the water. I suspect this wasn’t the first time as there was a container in the boat w/ the top cut off. Just wondering if the boat might have a leak.

Jason.  There was no water in the jonboat.  Never has been, and I’ve fished Weston SW Lake a dozen or so times.  We follow a similar “pattern” every time we fish the lake.  We start at the dam near the launch site and work our way down the dam to the east side and then to the shallow south end.  Then, work our way up the west side, back to the launch site.  We don’t go to the center brush piles until the last hour that we fish.  Most of our fish were caught on the east side, about 20 feet out from the large stand of trees.  There are some visible steel fence poles in the water.  There is a nice drop-off near them where we caught 5 of our 10 fish, and the largest one.  The brush piles, however,  are the main lake channel.  If you line up the south end lake entry with the north end overflow (bridge in the distance), you’ll note that the brush piles mark the main channel.  My fishing partner caught an 8.2 largemouth near the southernmost of the main brush piles last year in March on the night of the Super Moon. Good luck.

Jason,
I have only fished Weston one time and that was last summer.  However, due to the bluebird skies this week and my experience last year, I suspect that you were not fishing deep enough.  Weston has depths of over 14 feet and I suspect that most of the big bass were in the deeper water.  When I fished it last year, I was primarily using a lipped crank bait that could go down to 12 feet.  I caught about 10 bass; two were great - 24 1/2” and 22”.  I don’t estimate pounds because I think too many fisherman overestimate the weight of their fish.  Anyway, if you fish it again, I would recommend deep diving lures and/or Texas rigged worms with a relatively heavy bullet weight.  This does not mean that you should not try the shallower water; but if you are not catching fish, go deeper.

I fished those brush piles in the center but kept getting hung up, even w/ a spinnerbait. I obviously didn’t find the deepest part of the channel b/c I was afraid to throw anything that would run deeper that about 4-5 feet. That was my first time to fish there so I couldn’t imagine using something that would run 12ft deep but it’s good to know for the future. Thanks.
