Calendar blacked out-Fishing Pressure?

We have had a few questions regarding the reservation process and why dates are blacked out when you view the calendar to make the reservation. In the cases of our most popular properties; many, probably 40% to 50%, of the blacked out dates are NOT fishing trips. Yes, that is correct they are not fishing trips, but rather rest days. In some cases, when we have a group of 3 or more people fishing a particular property we will black out the day before a trip and the day after a trip. This is especially true on our higher priced properties where the demand is high. In another example, two weeks ago, Weston SW Lake had four ½ day trips booked in a 6 day period. While all 4 of these trips were just one or two people fishing for a ½ day, we chose to close the lake for 5 days in a row to let it rest. So, you might have looked at the calendar and seen 9 days blacked out in a 11 day period and thought, that place is getting hammered.  Moreover, some of our landowners request to close the property, a couple of days a month and some want to close it down for a week or two throughout the year. Allowing our landowners to use their property without our members on the property is all part of the relationship process, and makes the whole business model work. Unlike a traditional fishing lease where a group of fisherman pay a flat fee and you fish all you want, leaving fishing pressure unmonitored, we track each and every lake to make sure we do not over pressure the fish. While it is not a perfect system, we go to great lengths to monitor fishing pressure, as we have every incentive to keep the pressure down and the fishing good. When in doubt we generally choose to let it rest.
In conclusion, many of the blacked out dates are rest days or the landowner has the property closed for personal reasons.  We have got it covered and are very aware of the amount of fishing trips a particular lake can support. I hope this type of information is helpful as we want to be as transparent as possible, to make your membership as rewarding as possible.

Steve, this is very much appreciated. I have had talks with Bryan who has taken the time to educate me on this process and I think it is both wise and a benefit to all members. This only increases our chances of having a good day on the water. I for one, am appreciative that you do this.

I too appreciate the fact that the club is monitoring fishing pressure.  We are lucky to have such good management team keeping an eye on things.  Keep up the good work.

Just one more reason our organization is so successful.  I appreciate all the efforts on the part of the club and the landowners so that quality of the resource is insured.

Thanks,
Tom Strother,

one suggestion. i also had talked to brian about the blacked in areas of the reservation calendars. it is great to have the days of rest. would it be a good idea to mark the blacked out days with a note in the box. maybe just put OFF or some word in box to show if it is off day or reserved day. i say this cause when i was trying to pick a date one time in past it was hard to choose cause i didnt know if the date i wanted was after a rest day or after a fished day. just a suggestion . keep up good work

Phillip,

We thought of doing it this way. But, we decided to keep the day either open or closed without showing which is rest and which is fishing. The reason is that with 400 plus members, each member has their opinion on what is too much rest and what is too much fishing pressure. After many years of doing this we think we have a good handle on it. We are not perfect and there is not a science behind it; is a feel thing for us.

Sounds great to me - all part of sound lake management. I’m glad you guys are doing this - for the fish and for the fishermen!
