Got onto the water about 1:00 in my fishing tube.  After reading the fishing reports on Holmes (thank you), I started out with a rattle trap, and caught a few along the dam and the lily pads.  By the way, changing out to sharper/bigger hooks on Traps makes a big difference with fish staying hooked.

Enjoyed watching the blue-wing teal buzzing the pond, and just relaxing in the summer breeze, happy to have half of my body in the water.

Before I left for Holmes, I decided to take out my Dad’s old tackle box and take a few lures from it.  Dad’s been gone several years now, but I remember him saying about hunting and fishing gear, “use it or give it away”, so I picked out a couple of old Heddon Chugger Spooks and took them with me.

It was about 3:30, and I wasn’t really too tired or hot, but I wanted to get going for some dove hunting later that day.  On the way in to the launch, I tied up one of my Dad’s black/white Chuggers and tossed it up near the dam by the launch.  BAM!!!, within 2 seconds a 3 pounder latched onto it.  I saw another one swirl about 6’ away, so threw there next, and BAM again, this one even larger.  This happened 5 out of the next 7 casts!  It was amazing the concentration of big fish in that one area.  A few minutes later I pulled my tube out of the water and loaded up to leave. I’m sure that Chugger was at least as old as I was, and hadn’t seen the water in 25 of those years.  With my Dad’s Chugger in one hand, and a cold drink in the other, I could feel him smiling down in the hot afternoon sun.

It was a good day no matter how you slice it.

Great story! Thanks for sharing it, Bryan! I’ve got a few old hand-me-down lures from my grandfather. I should give them a try.

Bryan, Your comments about your dad, his tackle box, and the Heddon chugger brought a smile to my face.  That was my dad’s all-time favorite lure, and when I went through his tackle box after his death, I found several like the one you described (I assume it had the red head as well).  I still pull one out occasionally and almost always catch at least a couple on it.  It’s definitely a big bass lure.  Glad you had success with it and made a lasting memory!

Larry, yes it’s got a red head & mouth, black body, with a white “skeleton” printed on the sides of the body.  I know it’s been a long time since Heddon has made these lures, but they work better than any popper I’ve used in a long time. I’ve never seen a bass explode on a popper like that, much less several bass in a row.

This is what fishing is all about, and your dad knew this. Time alone on the water with your thoughts and memories of family and friends gone on, and to honor their memory by using what they taught you.
This is what Private water fishing is. a blessing.
Thanks for sharing your story.

Great memories, guys.  My dad’s favorite lure was the Heddon Punkinseed, a bluegill immitation.  I still have one from his collection.  It must be at least 50 years old.  Though I’m certain it will still catch fish, I think I’m gonna shadow box that one and display it on the wall in the Man Room!
