When I joined PWF in 2011, I fished Timber frequently. It was a consistent producer of bigger fish but still plenty of numbers to keep the action going. After a few slow trips, it seemed like the lake was fished out and I dropped it from my rotation. With some good reports posted recently, I decided to make another visit.
What a different lake. Lots of the timber has come down in the five years since I’d been there last, making the lake much more fishable. Another big difference? This is now a numbers lake. On a classic East TX spring day, the lake really produced. A couple of warm days in the mid 80s warmed up the water and pushed the fish into the shallows and easy to find. 10 – 15’ off the weed line held fish all day. They were also reliably found in up the creek channels. Any good cast into fresh water typically resulted in a strike. I got lucky that my prefered bait (a swimbait) was exactly what they were looking for.
I was on the water at 8:00. Caught 35 before a break for lunch. Then another 37 between 12:30 – 4:30. I made one big lap around the lake in my kayak, skipping the dam. Found them everywhere.
Temps ranged from 65 – 80. Almost bluebird skies. No wind. A storm chased me off at 4:30.
I spend most of my time in Wyoming these days (chasing trout!) but I’ll always come back to TX for the last two weeks in March and first two weeks in April to fish. Hard to beat. We are very fortunate to have this club to enjoy. I’m very grateful for the whole PWF staff as well as all the landowners. Thanks all!
