This beautiful wild bird sanctuary property is one of my very favorite. We three brothers fished pretty much all day Saturday, with strong winds all day, mostly cloudy skies, and a high temp in the mid seventies. The lake is full and the dinks (under 16” in this lake) were abundant. With the strong winds from the north all day we couldn’t really finesse-fish with my little 10’ TwinTroller boat (one of us fished from the dock and shore) so we did best with auger-tail worms on a weighted hook, or bladed grubtail swim or GT360 paddle-tail swim baits. We managed to remove only about three dozen bass or so, and would have removed triple that number except that our fish basket filled up twice with the 12 to 15” fish we were catching. If you care to look back at my report from March 2023 you’ll see that this has happened before, with huge numbers caught but culls nevertheless. I hope everyone fishing this lake comes prepared to stringer-up undersized bass so we can get the average size up there like it used to be. Over the years I have caught dozens of big girls out of this lake, up to 7lbs 15oz.
As usual there were swans on the lake, as well as the normal varied array of bird life. Both gates are currently manual operation. BTW, my brother who fished from the dock and walking along the dam caught bunches.
Side note: For lunch one of my brothers insisted we drive into Castroville and dine at Castroville BBQ Company on Lorenzo St. The serving line was long and slow, the service was friendly, and the place was crowded. The brother who insisted on this place decided to order a huge beef rib with a couple of sides and a drink. He just stood there looking at the cashier girl in shock when she told him his tab was $75. He hesitated but paid it, and we sat down to eat. He said the rib was good but not that good. Next time Bill Miller’s.
