My son and I reserved a full day to fish Lake Travis in Whitesboro, Texas, and kicked things off bank fishing just after sunrise—between 7:45 and 8:00 AM. The water was calm and glassy but had poor visibility, resembling chocolate milk with a faint green tint.
I started working the west side of the dock while my son took position on the east. On just my third cast, I landed an 18", 3 lb largemouth bass that struck close to the bank in about 12" to 18" of water. I was standing roughly 20 yards west of the dock when it hit.
Around the same time, my son caught a 15", 1 lb bass from the shallows using a Texas-rigged Zoom Super Fluke Jr. in White Pearl. I moved over to join him on the east side and soon matched his catch with another 15" bass, this one caught using a Black Neon D-Bomb by Missile Baits, rigged on a weighted hook—again, right in the shallows.
By 9:00 AM, we had three bass between us. We kept casting from the bank the rest of the morning, rotating between chatterbaits, crankbaits, and soft plastics, but the bite shut off completely.
At noon, we decided to change tactics and hit the water in the jon boat available on the property. The wind had picked up by then, but we were able to manage using a 30 lb thrust trolling motor and a 10 lb mushroom anchor.
Our only afternoon action came around 12:30 PM on the west side of the lake in front of the old oil derrick. My son started pulling in small bass—10" to 13"—on a Texas-rigged Zoom Super Fluke Jr. in White Pearl. He caught two back-to-back before the fluke was too torn up to keep fishing. Curious to see the bite myself, I handed him a Zoom Salty Super Fluke in Baby Bass, and like clockwork, he landed two more dinks right after.
It was clear we’d found a school of smaller bass holding shallow, but by 1:00 PM the bite died completely. We spent the rest of the afternoon trying to locate bigger fish in deeper water with crankbaits and a wacky rig, but came up empty.
Even though the action slowed down, it was a great day to be back on the water. We ended up catching and releasing a handful of undersized bass, culling five throughout the trip. No trophies this time, but the time together and the early morning bite made it more than worth it.
