Ron Dupree and I trekked to the new-to-club Silsbee Sand Pit and found some fast action.  Actually, it took quite a while for the action to start.  For the first 3-3.5 hours, we worked hard catching scattered bass who were mostly holding tight to submerged shoreline wood and brush all around the lake perimeter.  Wacky worms, lipless cranks, and chatterbaits all worked with the bass putting up hard fights as they headed to deeper water. Several bass were caught by random casting over mid-lake humps in 10-14 feet of water. We were each fishing solo in our one man Ultraskiffs and by this time the air temp was starting to climb rapidly and we each had 13 bass.  Good but not noteworthy. While moving to a new area, I saw a baitball on the graph and then noticed a few surface swirls around me.  The next six casts resulted in four fish, all 12-15”, some with followers staying with them all the way to the boat.  I got Ron’s attention and he quickly motored over and joined the action. The fast action slowed at times as we drifted away from the fish or the baitball and lurking bass repositioned but we were able to keep reaquiring the school as it seemed to stay in about 12-18 feet of water above a fairly sharp depth gradient. Chatterbaits, underspins, crankbaits, and even a rapidly worked speed worm caught bass.  While most of the bass were 12-15”, we both caught a few 3-3.5# and I had my line broken in open water fighting a larger fish (I should have re-tied after catching so many).  We tired ourselves out catching fish and the heat started to affect us so we called it quits before 1:30 with thunder in the area.  The final tally was 80 bass landed (20 harvested), 24 from shorelines and the rest offshore, a handfull of 3-3.5#, and average size 14-15”.

The lake is almost entirely surrounded by trees and has a pure sand bottom and clearish water.  Mining activity left a very uneven bottom. The are numerous humps and holes (we saw over 32 feet in the deepest) with a mix of moderate and steep slopes.  In many areas deep water is very close to the shoreline. The resident gators never approached but bear watching for.

Exercise caution backing your trailer down the slope to the launch.  It is soft sand and we got stuck for a while with 2WD and a trailer.

It was an enjoyable outing at a beautiful new club lake.  Thanks to the landowner for allowing us to pursue our passion/addiction in such a unique setting in SE Texas.

John, sounds like a busy day. Is the lake suitable for bank fishing as mentioned in the loaction description? Your report indicated the lake was surrounded with trees. Thanks.

John,

Bank fishing will be extremely limited due to trees and dense brush surrounding the lake. I only saw a couple of clearings along the shoreline and I don't know how one would access them.
