Fished Weston on Friday, 7/26 in the AM.  It was raining when I arrived around 7:00 and didn’t stop until about 10:30.  Luckily I had a poncho so I stayed semi-dry.  I had to retreat to my truck a couple of times to wait out heavy thunderstorms.

The lake was down a couple of feet with little/no vegetation, and with brown water.  I think the grass carp have done their job a little too well.

Caught a lunker crappie on a Chatterbait.  Caught 6 bass.  The largest was 19” and 4 # 10 oz.  I caught all of the bass on a Biffle Bug with Biffle Hardhead, reeling slowly close to bottom, primarily around the island and around the brush pile closest to the island.  Fished crankbaits, jig and pig, spinnerbait, and top water (after rain cleared) but got nothing.

I set the hook once with the Biffle rig and thought I had a big bass at first, but it wasn’t fighting very hard.  I got it close to the boat and one time I thought I had snagged some trash and another time I thought I had a beaver or nutria.  It turned out to be a huge snapping turtle which unhooked right at the boat.

I appreciate having that nice jon boat onsite to use.  But the trolling motor foot control could use some adjustments.  When you want to go straight, you have to put your heel all the way down with the foot control.  This is difficult when sitting and often ended up tacking right then left in order to go straight.  It was only a little easier to hold it straight when standing.

Overall an enjoyable morning of fishing without the heat.
