The lake is bank full and the spillway is running so it’s as beautiful as ever. I put in at about 5:10 in blazing sun and heat. I thought I it would be awhile before the fish would bite. I was wrong. I caught 10 bass on blue crawdads in the first hour. I thought, wow, this would be a 40 fish night. That’s about the time when my battery gave out. Looks like it didn’t survive the winter. So right when things should have gotten really, really good, I was loading up the boat and heading home. Too bad. So I’d say the lake is back……no doubt. Now for the bad news. All bass were in the 1 to 1 ½ lb range. This lake has way too many small fish in it as it always has. I noticed there is a new sign there that tells fisherman that they can keep fish within limits. This was not there before. I’d say that people need to keep their catches for awhile to remove a lot of these small fish. There are some big fish in this lake but they are elusive. I have caught one that was 7 lb 6 ozs during the spawn several years back, and the landowner says a 12 was caught there years ago but right now there are just too many small fish. To make it more fun, I’m going to go again in a couple of weeks and take only a fly rod which will make the small fish a lot of fun.
