Over the next 30 days the fish will be at their heaviest. I would expect the spawn to be a bit delayed this year, with unseasonably cold water. However, most believe the spawn to be a function of day length as water temp; so the delay will not be as long as you might think.
The fish will be moving up to more shallow water, 6 to 10 feet over the next couple of weeks and by March 1st to March 15th I would expect many of them to be in 6 foot or less water.
Late Feb and early March can bring wild swing in temps, but if you time it right you can kill them this time of year. Warm afternoons should be the ticket. Moreover, the winds are GENERALLY lighter in Feb/March than April and it makes it easier to fish for most fisherman. I can’t tell you how many times we here “It was so windy…..”
Now is the time to catch the biggest fish.
