Fished with a old friend who will hopefully become a new member.  Had trouble getting anything to work until John pulled out a small beetle spin from the depths of his tackle box and proceeded to school me on the merits of this old standard pond lure.  We ended up taking out 35 yearling bass and caught two coppernose bluegill as big as a dinner plate.  I would say “small baits, small fish” but he also landed a 22 in 5 + lb bass as well at a couple of other release fish.  I will be digging through my old boxes and reaquanting with an old childhood favorite again myself.  Great 1/2 day and lots of fun.  Lake over full and in great shape.

Great report, John!  I’ll have to give the old beetle spin a try some day.  As for the small baits, small fish idea, well, it is true you will catch more small fish on small baits than you will on big baits.  But in my experience big fish are just as likely to hit small lures as large ones.  In fact, of the five bass I’ve caught in my life that were 9 plus pounds, one was on a six inch worm, all the others on 4 inch worms.

PS Thanks for taking out the yearlings.  I try to do this as well, it is vital to the health of the pond.
