I had my best morning of fishing San Saba in my 10 year involvement with the club. Monday 6/28 my partner and I caught 7 fish over 6lbs and more than 15 fish over 4lbs. We lost count at more than 40 fish in a morning of fishing. Biggest fish was 7.12. The group of 4 members, 3 days before me, had a similar trip with lots of large fish. The difference was they caught most of their fish on plastics of all kinds. We were fortunate to have cloud cover and caught most fish on black buzzbaits until 10:00 AM and then caught some really big fish in the timber and deeper channel by the damn on DD22’s.
The purpose of my trip was to add 300 lbs of Tilapia to the lake. This should improve the health of the fish as some of the larger fish were beginning to get a bit thin. Moreover, we realize that the lake is beginning to see an issue with too much coontail, bushy pondweed and primrose. I have addressed the issue with the landowner and we plan to start the killing off process in small doses over the next few years. This process is expensive and must be done in small doses as not to deplete the oxygen in the lake, thus increasing the likely hood of a fish kill. San Saba is on fire and the really big fish are biting.
