...that I've caught more than 100 bass in a day's fishing! I jumped at the chance to fish the new property just west of Tushka, Oklahoma today. I got a late start fishing because I was unfamiliar with the type of Master combination lock that the landowner put on the gate yesterday. (If you go there, line up the combination with the dashes above the middle of the lock, not the line across the middle like most of the club's locks. Thanks to Seth for getting me in! Between that and the extremely wet "road" to the lake, I didn't get on the water until 8:00. My first two casts yielded two little ones, and the action pretty much never stopped all day - and most of it was on topwaters, all day long! I did catch a few out of that weedy, crystal-clear water on a wacky-rigged, weightess, black/blue flake Senko, a couple twitching a Gold/orange back Rapala, and several on a white single-spin.Most, though, were victims of a green back, shad-colored Yellow Magic. I honestly don't think those bass had ever seen a lure before; I caught so many fish that I actually had to take a break for lunch, which I also used to filet some of the smaller bass. After lunch, I kept throwing the YM, but also started casting a hollow-body frog. They killed that one, too. I never did catch a fish over 16 inches long, and wasn't even close to the touted 2- to 2.5-pound average size - but the numbers were definitely there. What a wonderful property to take kids to! The secret today was casting the popper over the weeds, most of which came within a foot or two of the surface in water that was 7-9 feet deep. Any shallower, and my trolling motor kept choking on the grass. The Senkos were picked up next to standing timber and in open water (there's still a LOT of wood lying on the bottom). The water temperature was a uniform 67.5 to 67.9 all over the lake. Even though quite a few fish threw the Senko back at me (and a few did the same with the YM and frog), I ended the day at 5:00 because I just couldn't hold my rods anymore. Totals for the day were 14 bass over 14" released and 87 little ones harvested. Even the dinks fought hard, and some of the 13.5" fish were real football-shaped 'chunks!' They didn't know they were as small as they were - hard fighters, every one! All in all, I had a great day on a beautiful lake. Nothing deep for me today, but as summer approaches, the bass will move to deeper water. Several of those 'chunks' I harvested were females full of eggs. The fish I fileted had been eating both crawfish and sunfish. I expect this property to become a favorite for those who don't mind fishing in Oklahoma. Thanks to Steve for getting this one for us to fish! Oh - Don't try to drive your family car to the lake - you'll need a truck or SUV, preferably a 4WD - especially if it's wet like it was today.
