i fished Yates Place on 2/7 and 2/8.  Temps were in the upper 70's and low 80's, but the wind blew hard all day both days.  Water was dirty and about a foot or so low; temps ranged from 59 to 68.

Tuesday i started about 7:00 and fished till 6:00.  The buzzbait bite was decent in the morning with the low clouds and wind, but stopped about 9:00 when the sun came out.  tried a lot of lures, but settled in with a watermelon fluke on a 1 oz carolina rig.  The wind kept me from anything lighter.  ended up with 20, all bigger than 16 inches, with a 5.0 as the big bass for the day.

Wednesday was cloudy and misty in the morning, and once again i had a buzzbait bite before switching back to the c-rig.  worked hard to get to 10 fish, but only ended up with 9 (3 harvested).  The largest was 5.1 and fell for the fluke.  Once the front came in about 1:00, then fish just quit biting, so i left at 3:30.

There are a lot of BIG balls of shad in this lake; i spoke several times to Mr. Yates and he said that he believes the shad have not had a major winter die-off in at least 5 years.  The little bass (8-12 inches) were chasing them all over the lake; could have caught a bunch of them but was going for the big bite.  also, saw a lot of big fish on my Lowrance units out in the middle of the lake, but with the wind, i couldn't figure out a good way to target them.  maybe next time.

all in all, a great trip for early February.  Cabin is very clean and comfortable.  Lake is full of fish.  Easy to launch and retrieve.  No sign of any spawning activity, but it could start any day with these temps.

James,

2 over 5 is a good day any day.  Nice job!  What depth(s) were you marking the big fish at?  Near trees, or out in the open?
