Fellow member John Shepard and I left Houston at 5:30AM and arrived at 8:30AM, launched the onsite boat, and kicked off a nice day of fishing at this beautiful location! Talk about solitude!
Nice wind from south gusting up to ~10 mph through the noon hour. Wind diminished through the afternoon and seemed to be coming from a se and later an easterly direction. Overcast for the most part throughout the morning, becoming partly cloudy with bright sun in the afternoon. Air temps slowly increasing from the 80’s in the morning to 100F in the afternoon. Water temps 87F at 9AM gradually climbing to 91F by the mid-afternoon. Water clarity ~5-6 ft. Substantial submerged weed growth was noted near the entire shoreline of the lake and was especially heavy on the west side, which precluded us from fishing the lily pads.
We caught a total of 26 LMB (culled 5) and one large white crappie (also culled) between launching the boat and calling it a day at 6:30PM. The bulk of the action took place from 9AM to 1PM, as we had very limited success getting a bite after 1PM (clearing skies, increasing heat and diminished wind), regardless what we threw. John’s tally for the day was 18 LMB with three stout beauties in the 20 – 21” range, and I managed to catch the rest, including the large one of the day at 21.75” (6.4lbs). The bass were healthy and sported a dark green-black coloring!!!
By the end of the day we had pretty much fished all of the tank (with the exception being the lily pads on the shallow west end) and found the shoreline from just west of the northern point (directly across from the house) to the southern portion of the dam to be the most productive. Pretty much all of our success was restricted to those portions of the lake impacted by the wind…no wind essentially no fish caught.
The bulk of our success came on three lures, deep cranks on weedless portions of the lake, whacky rigged green stickbaits and chatterbaits (with paddle tails) in and proximal the submerged weeds.
Looking forward to fishing this lake in the fall!
