I think it had been about two years since I had fished this great stretch of water hidden away in beautiful east Texas. As always, the highlight of the trip for my wife and me was the fellowship  and easy conversation with DeWayne and Kay Yates. What great folks and such gracious hospitality they provide. And the fishing, as almost always, was very good. Becky and I caught over 40 fish covering the span of two days, though the famous Yates Place big un's eluded us. A 5.7 and a 4 + were the biggest, with around 12 culls. One memory stands out:  I got on the water the second morning just after daylight with not even a ripple on the water and steam rising from the surface. Not 50 yards down the shoreline from the cabin I tossed a hollow-bodiy frog into the edge of the vegetation and the 5+ I mentioned earlier, ripped a hole in the water about the size of your kitchen sink. Big fight, lots of jumps, and a final slide into the net. Thought he was much bigger, but big enough to make for the perfect memory! Nobody but me and my Heavenly Father there to enjoy it, but it was more than enough! Just right in fact.  And that my friends is why Private Water Fishing is so special!

You cant beat it when a big one hits a top water. Sounds like a great trip - wished my wife fished (I Think).

Larry,

Great post enjoyed reading! We have been to Yates a couple times and found red was the popular color.  what color and what bait did you catch most of your fish? We are headed there memorial weekend!

Mel,

We caught them on a variety of lures. Biggest was on the frog, but others on black/red flake lizard, char./white spinnerbait, black/blue flake and baby bass color senkos,  We tried red shad worms, but no luck, though I've had success with red there before. We lost three or four others that were very good fish but didn't get them in the boat. Hope you have a great trip!

Great report! My biggest topwater fish was an 8-pounder caught at Yates. And 3 of our 4 biggest bass ever. Great memories! We look forward to going back there.
