Slot Fish
Fished Lakeside all day Saturday the 14th with my lovely wife. We stayed at the cabin Saturday night and headed for Lake Athens on Sunday morning.
The lake is about 1.5 feet low, water temps about 87, and clear to 6-8 feet. Upper end pads are still fishable, and you need to fish them. Weeds are taking over the little cove on the southwest side, but not too bad otherwise. We caught a few in the morning on topwaters (yellow magic and frog), but that ended very quickly as the sun came up. At our lunch break, we had only caught 15 with the largest at 3.9 pounds. We headed to Ben Wheeler for lunch at Moore's. Great place and great food, but the service is a little slow. That was fine with us, as we needed a break from fishing and the relentless sun. After staying there and drinking a gallon of water, we took the long way back to soak up a little more a/c.
The evening fishing started out slow, but finally got going in the last hour. We ended up catching a total of 37 (22 harvested) including three just over 5. My wife took home big fish honors with a 5.33 on a frog in the pads. This was her first frog fish boated after missing at least a dozen. I'm not sure who was more excited - her or me!!
As somebody else mentioned, you need to fish slow. I caught one on a black buzz bait, but everything else was slow (blue/black senko, frog, yellow magic, green pumpkin texas rig).
Great lake, but it needs some rain. The cabin as always was perfect; even my wife commented that she would be OK living in something like that after we retire. Gotta get busy looking!!!
