Made my second trip to San Saba in the last year and it was again well worth the drive. The lake was very different this time (from May last year) as there were no weeds on top. Alot more water to fish.  The fishing was outstanding on Saturday. We boated 72 bass up to just under 6 lbs. No monster bass this trip. Most of the fish were in the 2-4 lbs range. We caught them on a variety of baits including a watermellon lizard, crank baits (very good on small rapala’s), and a few on spinner baits. They seemed to want the bait slower than I was expecting for this time of year.  We weren’t after the crappie, but the small crank baits produced an amazing number of crappie (1.5-2lb) all day. We caught about 50 crappie to go along with the bass on Saturday.  Sunday was different in that it was cloudy and the fish seemed to back off a bit ahead of the front.  Fishing a half day on Sunday produced an additional 37 bass and about 20 crappie.  I was expecting to find the fish spawning, however it appears they are not quite ready. We did find some fish up in the back of the lake, but not as many as I expected.  The land owner has updated the boats and put a new one in service. The new one has a deck the entire length of the boat and three padded swivel seats.  Very very nice boat to fish out of. The other boat now appears to have a choice of the pro seats and plastic swivel seats with back.  It was windy most of the time, but since this lake has a S shape, there is always a place to fish out of the wind. We went back up in to the upper creeks and found a number of bass there. These are very deep creeks with alot of timber in them. They are not fishable in the summer when the weeds get up.  Can’t say enough about this lake.  Worth the trip.

While we all know San Saba is a great lake and a club favorite. Thank you for posting, we get calls everyday wanting to know how the fishing is at San Saba. We can send them to your report. Bill was out Big Bass winner from last year. If you have not entered the big Bass contest this year call the club oiffice. It is only $20 and it has a 100% payout. PWF does not keep any of the money. It is all for fun and a bit of pride. Last year Bill won about $350.00.There was a total of $550 given out.

Thanks Steve, I really appreciate all the work you guys are doing on the club and the opportunity to fish at a place like this. There are several amazing places to fish in this club, this being one of them. I don’t know that I have had a trip where we caught 180 fish in a weekend. Should would be nice to keep some of those big crappie! Can’t imagine how many of those might have been caught if we were fishing for them.

You may keep all crappie and we are harvesting bass 14” and smaller. I will add it to the requirements section.
