Great fishing at Martins Mill and Sam’s personal best

Sam and I lodged at the nice cabin and fished Martins Mill Lakeside first time, Friday Apr 5 with perfect weather, partly cloudy 75deg, 5mph wind.  Best fishing day we’ve had in the last couple years.

Total fish: we quit at 31: 1 at 7.1, 3 at 5+, 4 at 4+, 6 at 3+, 7 at 2+, and 10 at 12-14” culls

Water is still stained from dirt work with 1 ft vis, but that didn’t impact the fishing, in fact it may have improved it.  There is quite a bit of slimy algae around, but that seemed to be where the fish were so we just wiped off the slime and kept going.

At one point between 930-11 am we were getting bit nearly every good cast with big black/blue spinner bait and bright craw senkos.  Later in the afternoon it got slow so we left around 430 pm.

We were able to get up very shallow 1-2 ft and pull several chunky 3-4-5 pounders out of the bedding holes in the moss, within 10 ft from bank, including 11 yr old Sam’s best to date at 7.1 pounds.  Often we were throwing senkos onto the bank and dragging into water, with hits coming 1 ft from shore.   Fish seem to be in mid spawn with small males aggressively protecting fry. All the bigger females seemed spawned out and thinner and out a bit deeper at 2-4 ft.

We really enjoyed the variety of size distribution and numbers of bass in this lake.  Some of the bigger ones were a bit thin for their head size.  I heard from the owners they dumped over 3000 baitfish this week, but that didn’t seem to fill up these monsters as they were still hungry.  I hope the great fishing holds up.  We culled 10 to leave more food for the big ones.

Anybody lose a white chatterbait on a fish last few days? One of the 4lbers had a white chatterbait broken off deep but still bit on Sam’s big black/blue spinnerbait.  We were able to get both lures out with forceps and release in good shape.  See pics below.

Sam's PB at 7.1 lb

Anybody lose a white chatterbait on a 4lber?

My best of day at 5.5 lb

Yes, I lost that bait.  However, I was certain it was a 12 lber.
