I will be going to fish San Saba for the first time and have read most of the previous fishing reports, however, I was wondering if anyone has any additional advice as far as hot spots, effective lures etc.

You’ll love it. Wish I was going with you.  We did well on green lizards and puple worms with red tails. Small crank baits work pretty well. You will likely catch a number of crappie if you fish smaller crankbaits with some good bass mixed in. A couple of weeks ago, we found most of the fish on the shorelines that had the most large boulders on them. The more rocks the better. There is an arial map in the house that shows the actual lake. The water is very low in the picture so you can see the creeks very well. When we were there a couple weeks ago, they were in shallow water, but still fairly close to the creeks. I expect you’ll find em.  Have fun.

I was there with a guest on March 14 and 15. Standing on the dam, the trees to the right as you enter the cove held a huge concentration of crappie.  I caught my larget crappie ever, weighing in at 2.5 lbs and 16 inches.  All were caught on orange Road Runners.

We faced windy and cold conditions in the mornings with temps rising to the upper 70’s by late afternoon. We managed to catch around 40 bass for the trip.  Two were over 5lbs, a couple were around 4 lbs. and ther remainder were around 2 and 1/2 to 3 lbs.  Verey few dinks. The majority were caught
on Red Plumb Power Worms in 10 in. length.

Good luck!

I’ve fished San Saba five or six times over the years, and we almost always catch a ton of fish and a lot of big fish.  Have not been this year, so cannot offer any current advice.  But I did take a picture of the arial photo Bill mentions above that is framed on the wall of the cabin—which I think shows the lake some years ago, when the dam had been built but before the entire lake had been filled.  The photo shows the creek beds and other structure very clearly.  I also have a screen shot from Google Earth showing the filled lake, so you can compare the two.  I would be glad to share those images, if they would help.  Good luck.  San Saba is my all time favorite place to fish for bass.

Hope for cloud cover and you can wear them out on black buzz baits. I have been lucky enough to have been there on several low light days. If you can stand the heat June and July are great months for fishing San Saba.

I like to throw deep diving crankbaits in the open water in front of the dam and the stand of trees 50 yards in front of the launch area. Otherwise pitching Senkos along the shoreline is the old standby, but still produces fish.

Take a truck load of Watermellon, Green Lizards. I would take some smaller lures and jigs and expect some massive crappie. Use stout line for Big Bass. Take plenty of food and drinks as there is nothing close to purchase anything.

Lastly, invite me to join you on the next trip. San Saba is my favorite in the club thus far!

PS, I understand the local Sheriff is pretty tough while you are driving on the dirt roads so be forewarned
