My wife and brother in law joined me in our first trip to Yates on Friday afternoon and Saturday, 4/29-4/30. Friday was a bluebird day with constant south wind 7-15 mph. and water temp 76. Water color was green w/ visibility about 3’-4’. The lake is just starting to get a good algae bloom. Friday we took out a few dinks on crank baits in 6-8’ water and lost one really nice fish when it threw the lure (Suspending FF Shad in Tenn Shad color). Saturday was overcast in the a.m., but the wind picked up again after 10 a.m. and skies became partly cloudy ahead of a front. Picked up a number of 3-3.5# and one 4.25 on white buzz baits in the a.m. Went back to the cranks and hooked up with a 5.25 on over brush pile in 6-8’ water. Then a 7#3oz on 10” red shad powerworm on the edge of brush in the same water. Late afternoon the bite was scattered and back to crankbaits
DeWayne and Kate Yates have really done a fabulous job of carving out a trophy bass lake where there was rolling pasture and hardwoods just 11 years ago. The owners are aggressively managing the fishery at no small cost in time, labor and finances. My feeling is that Yates will produce a new club record in the near future. I hope I’m there when it happens. The accomodations are great and the Yates made us feel really welcome, throughout our stay. We will be going back soon.
