This was only my second time in ten years in the club to see schooling bass. I think it was 7 years ago on Hidden lake in Tyler was the other.  It was too windy to use the boat so I was relegated to fishing from the dock. The water started boiling with bass chasing small 1 to 2 inch bait fish.  These bait fish were all over at the end of the dock in balls anywhere from 2 feet to 4 feet wide. I quickly put on a gold rattletrap and caught a couple. Then I switched again to a shallow diving crankbait that imiitated a bluegill. The final count was 15 Bass of which I kept 5.  The other 10 bass were all over 16 inches and one went 18 inches. Not sure if they will be there again but it would be worth your while to catch bass that are recklessly smashing your crankbait.

I spoke to Bob about this report and was excited to learn that 10 of these bass were 2-3 lbs. It has been many years that we have caught that size class of fish in this lake. It has usually many dinks or an occasional 8 to 10 lb fish caught every other year. Certainly, there were days when members would catch 2 and 3 lb fish, but not 10 of them. We beleive this is a direct result of managment efforts. We have a long way to go, but these results are really encouraging. As I have said many times before, this lake has the potential to be really, really good. However, it will take a few more years and a lot more managment dollars to turn it back to its glory. In the meantime, get out and catch some nice schooling bass.
