Went out Monday afternoon. Great lake. Caught ten or twelve bass in maybe four hours. All very healthy looking. Most in the 2-3 lbs range. One I would guess was 5-6 lbs. I was wrestling another in, and could tell it was a big one, when he started steam-rolling away from me; I loosened the drag, but he snapped my line. It was 12 lbs test line. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean he was a 12 lbs fish, but he was a big one.

I was fishing a soft plastic tube, in a mottled green color, with a little frilly tail, texas-rigged. Bouncing it along the bottom seemed to work well. Tried a couple of other baits, but the tube was producing fish. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I fished from my canoe mostly toward the banks, and around cover—there are some stumps, weed clusters, a few cattails, etc. The middle of the east side of the lake seems to have a pretty precipitous drop-off maybe ten feet out from the shore (though the lake level may be pretty high due to all the precip. lately), and that drop-off seemed like a good place to catch fish. The 5-6 pounder was around that drop-off.

A word to the wise: the lake is surrounded by cow pasture (ergo the name). I parked in the pasture and left the windows of my truck down. When I got back to the truck after fishing, there were about 200 flies chilling inside on the roof. I advise you to roll your windows up. I’m still getting flies out of the truck, despite having driven most of the way back to Dallas on the interstate with all the windows down.

I met the landowner as I was leaving and he was very friendly. He said come back any time, and look for him at the house or the barns if I ever needed anything.

All in all a very pleasant afternoon. The weather was perfect, the sun was shining, the grass was green, the water was cool, the bass were active.

Wet lines,

I was wondering about this location as I haven’t fished it since the 2007 drought. This was the best top water lake.  We would catch them all day on buzz baits, frogs and pop-r.  Bank fishing was good except for fire ants.  Sounds like I need to get to fairfield this spring.
