Although the wind was blowing so hard that it made it next to impossible to cast I stll had a good day on Malouf lake. I’m a new member and was excited to test the waters and see what PWF was all about. Eventhough I thought I would have the lake to myself. To my surprise their were about eight people there. I guess the owner has lots of family.
I caught 26 fish today from the 1 lbs. to a little over 5 lbs. range all but four came on a shallow crankbait in about 5 to 7 ft. of water. The rest came from swimbaits. This lake had a lot of what I call scum moss the stuff that get’s all over anything you throw but it does have some good grass [ ex. hydrilla] which all the fish were relating too. All my fish came from the south end of the lake from 4 p.m. till dark. It best if you have a boat for this lake and even better if you could go during the middle of the week.

The scum moss was probably filamantosa algaea. (Also called FA). It can be controlled by adding Tilapia (they love to eat that stuff), chemicals, and fertilizer. Chemicals and Tilapia are expensive. Fertilizing lakes can give huge benefits, including kicking off the phyto planktoon bloom and reducing water clarity. Water clarity of 15”-24” is ideal. We will be fertilizing several lakes this year and will keep you posted on which ones. It is relatively inexpensive and does not take much time. If you guys will harvest on the lakes we request, and we fertilize these same lakes, you will see an improvement in the quality of fish caught. Currently, these things will be happening at Grapeland Bennett lake, Crockett Melody Acres, Sulpher Bluff Deer Trial, with more lakes to come. You have to wait until the water temp is 65 to 70 degrees or you are wasting money. So fertilization will happen in the next few weeks on these and other lakes.
