Fished Black Hat yesterday. Surafce water temp was 60, warmed to 62 by end of the day – strong SW wind. Water visibility was about a foot towards the dam, but over 4 ft down in the shallow end. Could see a line across the lake, about at the dock, where the water visibility rapidly improved – don’t know why…. As per other reports, in the shallows there is weed growth of about 2’ coming up from the bottom (so within a foot of the surface in places). However, yesterday this was where the fish were. I fish out of a kayak, so could get in and move about there without a problem, would be more of a challenge with a trolling motor. Caught about 20 bass in there over a few hours, especially in the channel between the islands. A slow twitched freeline senko caught them all, largest 3 were right at 3lbs, all healthy looking chunks. A lot of fun catching quality fish in 1-4’ of water. Fish have not yet spawned, but looked like the first females were moving on to beds. Tried hard across the rest of the lake without much success (lack of visibility can’t have helped). Caught a couple of smaller bass on a rattle-trap, one slab crappie on a wacky worm pulled through the brush pile by the dock. Could see the big girls staging in the deep hole up by the dam (right side of the dam, right in front of the point sticking out, depth goes from a few feet on the dam side to 12+), but couldn’t get a bite on TX rig, crank bait etc. They should be moving on to beds in the next few days – it gets to 80 on Saturday…. Landowner puts a lot of effort in at Black Hat – fish feeder, aeration, looks like he’s added two artificial brush piles since my last visit – thanks!
