Bob Scheidemann, Ron Dupree, and I had a fun day at BlackJack Ranch on the 3rd but it didn’t start as expected.  We arrived about 7AM and storms could be heard in the distance. By 8:00 the lightning was chasing us to the truck.  Until this point the bite had been good; 16 bass landed on topwater and squarebills.  For the next several hours, light rain was periodically interrupted by small stronger storms with vigorous lightning.  Radar showed the southern edge of a large storm system was training over us.  It wasn’t even raining a couple miles to the south.  We fished in the light rain and took breaks for the lightning but the bite had slowed down to a crawl. Ron and I launced the boat in the light rain around 11 and stared fishing the outside weed lines south of the pier and found scattered bass using craws, wacky worms, jerkbaits, and squarebills.  The submerged vegetation is becoming vigorous again and the water is clear. We never found many bass in a single spot and spent the afternoon moving from spot to spot, catching a few at each. Bob had success from shore with a weightless fluke floated over the vegetation.  We ended the day around 6PM with 90 bass landed of which 31 were harvested. Most of the bass were the 2# variety and healthy.  Our best two bass were a 5# and an almost 7#. It was another great day fishing with friends at a beautiful property.
