Fished Pecan Gap yesterday and hit it on the right day – had a great afternoon (fished from noon to dusk). Lake is about 2’ low, water clear, weeds have yet to punch through the surface outside of the shallows. Water temp was in the mid-60’s. Caught a couple on a swim bait and rattle trap along the dam and in the stumps at the far end – then switched to free-line senkos and caught steadily all afternoon . Ended up with 25 LMB and one monster blue gill. About a third of the bass were 3lb+, largest at 4.4. Was able to sight cast to quite a few of them – would have been a great day for the paddle board fly fishermen. Hot spots were in the corner at the far end of the dam and then in the two creeks at the south end (especially as the sun left the water). Spawn is mostly done, caught two females full of eggs, but the rest were done – lots of small fry in the margins. In over 20 years with PWF (and GTBC), have yet to catch a 10lb+ bass from a club water, but may have got close yesterday…. Saw bait fish jumping out of the water in the dam corner, eased over in the kayak and saw a monster… Hit it spot on with a senko, only for a small male to grab the bait. Kerfuffle caused the monster to jump clean out of the water – hard to tell but must have been 8+ (or more). Ah well, a great fishing memory
