Fished this property on 6 October with another member, Marshall Hogue, from 7 AM until 5 PM (Marshall had to leave at 2 PM - see his report for the reason).
Conditions:
Water Temp: 70 - 73
Air temp: 66 - 88
Water clarity: clear 2-3 ft
Wind really picked-up in the late morning and was very gusty after 2 PM.
Sky was variable
The tank is maybe 4 feet low, but very fishable.
The new boat is great. Please thank the owners for providing it (I did not have to load my kayak which can be difficult for one person).
Before Marshall left, we probably had over 70 and I caught another 10 after he left. The majority I caught on the rattletrap (some photos were sent to the info e-mail address).
The largest was probably just under 3 lbs and we did catch several over 2 lbs.
We both recommend this property still needs to cull the under 14” bass.
Lures that worked (Marshall will also be submitting a report):
- White frog early along the dam and in the weedbeds to the right of the pier
- Silver rattletap (we both had great success with this fished fast and in 3-8 ft)
- Late in the day (after 2PM), I caught about 5 on a medium running crank bait (aqua/chart.) also fished fast.
All my strikes were aggressive and I did not miss one that I set the hook on ( very unusual for me).
Lures that did not produce:
- Jerk bait (soft or hard)
- Weighted fluke
- Buzz bait

Fished BlackJack on Thursday with Bill Fetech, very enjoyable partner in the boat. We did really well as stated above, easily over 70 fish between the 2 of us and maybe 40 or more were small, 10” or less. Still fun to catch, its about the pull but the lake does need some more removed. We had numerous doubles and twice I had 3 fish in 3 casts. We did catch alot of 2# or more which helped. They were very aggresive, many times we thought we had bigger fish than what we ended up with and the bigger fish bodies were larger in proportion than their heads. The best lures were rattletraps and I never changed the one I used, my own handpainted. Caught some better fish on spinnerbait after wind picked up. Very few on plastics, they were turned on to fast moving baits. Early topwaters were ok and the shallow weed infested end of the lake had some blowups on frogs. It was a very good day of fishing till I stood up to bring a fish through the weeds and ended up swimming when the boat shifted on me. Phone and IPOD got soaked. Oh well, it could have been winter and all in all it didn’t ruin my day. Again, I throughly enjoyed fishing with Bill, I don’t get the chance to fish with someone very often. Boat was nice to be able to use. This a very nice and easy lake and it is being filled with water from a well by the lake with a pretty good flow of water going into it., I was surprised by the water level. I look forward to getting back out to BlackJack and joining Bill on fishing trips to Hill Country lake and Gallant Elm in the future.
