Fellow member John Shepard and I traveled to Giddings Black Jack Ranch Saturday 5/8. Water was up from the much needed recent rains but still very clear. John started on the shallow end with topwater and found some action while I started on the pier casting towards the shallow end with a jerk bait and beetle spin catching a couple. We decided to not waste any time walking the banks and rig the boat out before the forecasted high winds moved in. We headed to the dam and anchored up on the left side. We bombed the area with top waters and wake baits catching several 2-3 lbers. We moved accross the dam to the other corner with about the same results. we moved around quite a bit looking for the masses but never found a big school in any one location.

The cloudy skies started to break up and the sun appeared early afternoon giving us hope the change would improve the bite but it did not. after a couple more trips up and down the lake with only 2-3 bites in 3 hours and the wind howling we did the unthinkable for us and gave in to the conditions.

Water temp started ~74 deg and was 76 deg when we left. Vegatation was thick around the edges and started thinning  in the 6-7 ft depths.

Popr’s, floating frogs, and wake bait worked best over the vegatation, whacky rigged lightly weighted or weightless stick worms in the deeper water.

Ended the day with around 30 total with 2 culls. Avg size was about 2-3 lbs
