I was happy to be able to take my dad fishing this morning. We picked a property between the two of us and met up nearby to drive in together.
First of all my dad loves to catch and eat fish, mostly catfish at area lakes while enjoying the retirement life. I told him to bring a cooler for any harvest fish we catch. He chose not to mess with it.
Well, we did not catch any bass small enough to harvest (9 over 14”), but we did start to notice the trend of the large crappie loving our swimbaits. He soon regretted not bringing a cooler as the livewell began to get crowded with crappie to remove.
He couldn't stand the thought of those crappie not being in his freezer, so he drove into Winnsboro and picked up a cooler and ice at a convenience store. He took home 26 crappie. He and my mom will enjoy those for sure.
We only fished a few hours in the morning as the storms came in, and we stuck to the first lake. Most bites were on the swim baits, including a few bass. We also caught some bass on some various topwaters. The largest was 3lb 10oz. The rest were all long enough to swim another day. That return percentage is proof that harvesting is working. In a couple of years, this will be a premier property for quality bites.
I look forward to returning to this beautiful property and trying my luck at the third pond for some strong numbers of bass.
I wish we had longer to fish and could have stayed dry. After having to cancel my trip this past weekend because of weather, I was not going to miss this opportunity to put some fish on the end of my dad’s line (and of course into his freezer as the case turned out). It turned out to be a great trip, though, that we will talk about for a long time.

Nice work Stephen! That is a good bag of crappie. This rain has been brutal but I know it will be better for the fish come summer.
