This location was my first trip out as a member.  The resorvoir is one of the best looking little lakes I’ve fished.  The drought has retracted the water levels a bit and it appears to be down about 10 feet; 4 feet is the deepest hole I found.

Saturday was extremely windy and I was struggling to keep my kayak on top of the fish.  The fish were schooled up in 2.5 feet of water on the east side of the lake, right in the middle of the first set of Cypress trees.  I caught a 3lb’er on the first cast, then a couple of throwbacks (wacky worm).  I hooked a pretty good sized gar on a rattle trap.  I wonder how he got in the pond?  I fished for about 3 hours but the wind irritated me, so I packed it in.

Watch out for the gator.  There was one tracking my kayak for a good 20 minutes.  He looked to be somewhere between 7 and 9 feet long.

Your next trip try Ashwood Palms.  I only fished it once but was a quality day of numbers and size.  White spinner baits and watermelon shad bass assassin.  I fished buckhorn around 5 years ago and had to contend with a gator that looked as big as my bass tender boat. I gave in and stayed on the other side of the lake.  They must come up from the trinity.

I will definitely try that one soon.  How did you do when you were last at Buckhorn?  I am guessing the pond was at normal levels then.  Beautiful place.

Thanks Robert.

It was a very cold Houston day.  Got 6 on a silver with blue back rattletrap. Not a stellar day but I did get to see that big gator.plus I almost got my truck hung up on those rail tracks. Just crossed them at the worse place, I was still asleep.  Have fun at Ashwood Palms. At one point I stood in one place and caught 28 on 28 casts on a white spinner at Ashwood.  Down by the dock there was some monsters sitting on their beds.  I just could not provoke them to take my tube.  Enjoy the club best thing since sliced wonder bread.

Ashwood Palms is a great place to fish.  I have fished several times and have enjoyed catching good numbers in a half day fishing.  The ponds change from summer to winter also and have used frogs and tops water in the summer to crank baits and spinners in the winter.  Also, I would fish Damon, I fished this location twice and the first time caught about 50 or 60 but good size but as the drought set in it was tougher.  I fished buckhorn and was disappointed with the location as it didn’t seem they kept up with it and I didn’t like all the alligators.  I only caught 3 fish also and the water level was extremely low.  At Ashwood Palm, they have the ability to pump water so it has always been full,  Damon doesn’t pump water so they are probably pretty low.

Damon is really too low to fish right now.  Pete, you may want to try Crockett, Fedor, or Giddings? Huntsville, Bryan and Normanagee are still closed due to low water. You can always go back to Ellington, there are some really big fish in that lake. Unfortuntely, the drought has really hurt all of us, especailly our Houston members. Thanks for hanging with us, it has got to get better, right?
