I fished Bigwoods on the Trinity on 09-05-21 from dawn to about noon. I caught 28 LMB, with 20 culled and 8 returned. The culls ranged from 10 inches to just shy of 16 inches, with the top five returned at about 22.5 lbs, with a 5 lb and four between 4 – 4.5 lbs, a sixth at 3.7 lbs and two at 3 lbs. The water level is down significantly, about 2 feet, reducing the surface acreage by about 20% and exposing the duck lanes and berms, with surface grass choking out about another 20%, but leaving the fish concentrated in the deeper open areas. Most productive areas were any laydown timber, lanes between the surface grass with a popmax; 6-8 foot flats with submerged grass with a chatterbait and edges of grass with a fluke. After hearing several early morning blow-ups and unusual disturbances in the shallow surface grass areas, I tried a frog for a little while, which quickly revealed a gator as the source of the huge blow-ups. He loved to chase that frog and didn’t show enough respect for social distancing to make me want to stick around. He came to boat several times and I would estimate 4 feet in length. I guess that is why it is called Bigwoods on the Trinity (River).
