I had a chance to fish San Saba last week with 3 club members and we struggled. I have fished San Saba more than 20 times and this was the toughest day I had experienced.  We landed 8 fish between the 4 of us and lost another 5 or 6 fish. Big fish landed was about 4 lbs and lost a 5lb plus at the boat.. As you might expect all but one or two of the fish were caught in 15-20 foot of water. 2 months ago the lake got a great 10 inch rain, but we still need more water, the lake is about 4 feet low.

Curtis Lovelace, the newest member of PWF joined the group and got his first Saba expereince.

While the lake has lost a little of its huge fish mystique, it is still a lake that holds some great fish and spending the night in the cabin with friends is something all of our members should experience. For me the adventure starts with the 4 hour drive, followed by stories, followed by more stories, keeping you up to 2:00 in the morning, fishing 12 to 15 straight hours and ending with 4 hour drive home. I can recall almost each of those 20 trips and everyone has some great memories. My guess is our long time members also have some memories. I would love to read some.

San Saba is my favotite location so far as the terrain is so much different than East Texas and what I am used to. It’s worth the 4 hour trip from Dallas. Turkeys everywhere and an occasional deer coming down to the lake. I am glad to hear the lake has come up so much. My last trip, the lake was 6 to 7 feet down. Fishing was impaired, but the bait fish were everywhere. We have done well here in the past and this lake has some very large Crappie in it that even hit Rattle Traps.
You may want to bring your own boat battery and battery charger although as twice the batteries provided let us down…..
The house is set up for many guests and the drought had us afraid to fire up any out door grills as we normally like to do on these trips. Make sure to bring any food, beverages, or suppies needed as it’s quite remote from anything which is a plus in my book.

Some stories are better left untold.

Brad can comment about some stories left untold but I’ve witnessed him catching a 10 lb fish and 45 minutes later one of our party boating a 26 + lb bag of 5 fish in a 20 minute span.
