Dallas was about to be enveloped in rain and cold when we made our trip east to Hidden Springs.  We arrived to a chilly, still morning at Hidden Springs, where the lake was like glass.  We caught our first fish just before sunrise, but for the rest of the day, the east wind that began to blow left us with very subtle bites.  We caught isolated fish in the upper half of the lake, but never more than one in any area.  Small fish liked the cranks, the better fish liked the jigs.  As is true on many lakes, the incredible cold affected forage and most fish were beautiful but a bit thin.  I hooked a catfish and caught a beautiful brim on a small crankbait, but with the northeast wind the fish acted like post-frontal fish.  Sluggish, subtle strikes were easy to miss.

But the sun warmed the lake all afternoon, and as sunset approached, we caught our best fish and watched as the sky put on quite a show for sunset on Hidden Springs.  Dallas was already chilled by then, but we were enjoying a near perfect sunset on this beautiful place.  Leaves look to be about two weeks from Hidden Springs dramatic fall color on the water—it’s always picture-worthy, but we were just a little early this year.
