This is my first report for a fishing outing so forgive my late entry. I wanted to make sure I dropped in a report on my trip to Triple J Ranch on Dec 31st, 2011. I had an early start with my buddy on this property. I was pleasantly surprised how close it was from downtown Dallas. It is literally off the highway from viewing distance. What better way to end my year than fishing?
So let’s get to the stats, the outside temp was in the upper 30’s in the morning with highs reaching upper 60’s. That’s good because I was very concerned the temps would slow the fishing down. There was a (V hull) boat easily accessible to launch from the edge of the lake. The water level was several feet low. My guess is maybe 5 feet low. You could see where there were submerged trees on the north side of the lake that were not underwater anymore. Take caution when working the North West side of the lake, low levels. Having said that, we launched and spent most of the day on the Southside nearest to the dam. The bait of choice that day was the Strike King Bleeding Gizzard Shad and Sexy Shad. I had success on both baits working over weed beds near the dam. The bass were hugging very close to the grass and the lipless cranks did the trick. I rolled it over the grass 7 - 10 ft range. 14 bass total, all around 2-3 lbs. Every bass was consistently about that size. They were stacking in some places, but all I needed was a couple of lipless baits. The color was white and white with a black back. The water was stained with little to no visibility. My best friend and I had a blast catching bass in December. There is something about catching bass in colder weather when everyone around you says you can’t. I loved showing my family, yes you can!
Good Luck Boys!
