I took a buddy out to visit Lago and see what dust we could kick up – and boy did we!

First off, this is one of the nicest properties I’ve visited within the club. Immaculate approach on the road and since we booked a full day the early morning arrival greeted us seeing deer sprinting all over the place.

We pulled up, hopped out, noticed tons of baitfish popping up everywhere and knew they were feeding shallow and sure enough first cast we both caught fish – doubled up. One was just under the 16” mark and my buddy caught a 17” fish. We thought this was a good, or maybe bad sign and it definitely turned out to be a great sign!

The boat was in perfect condition and worked like a charm for both of us (I made sure to plug the batter back in at the end of the day!) – we worked from the launch counter clockwise about 20 yards out from the bank and made 3 slow circles around the lake casting towards the bank and then casting into the middle back towards the boat. We had so much success with chatterbaits (shad profiles paddle tail traliers) and green pumpkin jigs that we just stuck with what produced! We tried throwing bigger swimbaits to see if we could get beyond the 16-19” bass but they weren’t chasing any swimbaits.

Overall we caught fish everywhere. Literally every single zone over the entire lake – the lake looks a bit low? Either way we caught fish everywhere. We culled 22 that were all very active fighters. Even the 30+ that we returned always felt way bigger/stronger than their length and weight. The culling process is proving itself as needed – all of the fish under the size limit were strong and fat and all the fish we caught in the 17-19” range were beautiful but quite skinny. Still, they all fought like we were going to be pulling up 5+ pounders. We probably missed 10-15 fish in total and it normally it’s not fun to lose a fish but at the rate we were scooping fish it was just a blast to be casting and picking up numbers.

One funny thing was the wild amount of bird activity – we thought that was fun but pretty crazy. Ducks, herons, a giant pelican(???), and a bunch of other species all attracted to the water. Seems like it could’ve been great for duck hunting.

The water lillies were 100% nuked but still held a lot of fish. We anchored up just outisde the edge of the water lillies and one after another tossed 3/4oz green pumpkin and orange/red craws into the pads and bounced them back to us to violent blow ups – so much fun. Those shallows were producing a ton. The other major point of ease were the trees/structure scattered in the middle. We’d toss at the trees or within a foot or so of where structure stuck out and would immediately be slammed by a fish.

Phenomenal day with so many fish we really did lose count – in total it was 50+ but could’ve been closer to 70? No idea. We’re certain of the culls and that was 22 fish with the biggest being a 20” healthy but relatively skinny girl – she fought hard and swam away furiously though.

Excited to come back in the winter to slow the roll down and see if we can find any of the bigger fish hiding out in the lake!

Cheers PWF!
